Sisi gets the red carpet treatment. - 4kms of red carpet
Bought with UK Aid or with one of the loans?

Egypt receives billions of dollars each year in military and economic aid from western countries.  As Government corruption is endemic is Egypt, most of these grants cannot be traced once the money gets into Government accounts.  25% of Egypt’s population still live in abject poverty many of them without sanitation or running water.  Their children are malnourished, despite the grants, as there is never enough money for nourishing food.  However, there is always money for new fighter jets, arms, submarines and frigates plus millions spent on grandiose vanity projects like the Suez Canal extension.

Well this week the excess was astounding as four kilometres, (2.5 miles) of red carpet were laid along Cairo streets for President Sisi’s car to drive over on his way to a venue announcing a new set of doomed initiatives.  Yes, it really was 4 km not 4 metres.  Cairo’s streets are not paved with gold they are covered in carpet.  It is disgraceful.  Sisi’s apologists do him no service by saying that he would not be aware of the preparations.  Can you imagine the leader of a nation not knowing when several million pounds are spent on him rather than on a project and if he did not sign off agreement on the preparations then one of his ministers has.

The excuse put forward for such excess what that ‘it shows just how much the military think of him’.  Well the military might think greatly of him as he is making his generals very rich.  What about the people at the bottom end?  Will it put food on their table or create jobs for them to work and earn a living to support their families?  What is the next step in the adoration of Sisi campaign?  King Sisi?  Are they going to restore the monarchy so that he can have an even more adoring set of groupies?

This week an Italian student was horrifically tortured and murdered in Cairo.  Suspicion points to the Government as he was working a PhD research into Trade Unions in Egypt. That would automatically make him a target.  He disappeared on the anniversary of the Revolution when Cairo was flooded with soldiers and tanks, which points even more to Government abduction, adding to the many other ‘disappeared’.  Anyone who does not adore Sisi is in danger – and yet the west still pours money into his coffers.

So, the question is, ‘why is the west so desperate to cosy up to Egypt that they will overlook every principle in the book?’   Is it to support Israel or to try and thwart the ambitions of Russia?  Whatever the reason, is Egypt’s President really worth 4 kms of red carpet?
